Passing - 5 v 1 x 5

How to play

  • Groups of five
  • Long channel
  • Five nominated defenders in each channel
  • One ball per group
  • The defenders stand one behind the other, 5m apart
  • The defenders are only allowed to move sideways
  • The attacking team of five players must beat each defender in turn and score a try at the end of the channel
  • Any attacker who is tackled can play no further part in the move
  • In a group of 30 players, there would be two sets of five defenders and four teams of five attackers, so two attacking teams taking turns in each channel

Coaching points

  • Try to run around the defender but pass if a team mate is in a better position
  • Support players stay behind the ball
  • Keep the head up
  • Focus on the waist of the ball carrier

Harder (for the attackers):
  • Allow defenders to move forwards and backwards as well as sideways
Easier (for the attackers):
  • Place the defenders further apart (every 10m rather than every 5m)
