It's easy to look on warming up as a bit of a formality, something to has to be done, before you get down to the serious business of training. However, you shouldn't underestimate the importance of a good warm up - not only is it a great way to get your players physically ready it's also a way to start as you mean to go on and get your players mentally prepared.

To get your players' blood pumping and add a bit of interest to your warm ups this week's warm up ideas have been split into three categories:

• Ice Breaker Drills, Moving to meet the Ball exercises and Passing Warm Ups

Can you Dig it? Keep the ball alive with a Defensive Bump

This week's session works on your players' ability to react quickly, get low and keep the ball alive with the Defensive Bump. Read on to learn more!

The Bump (also known as a dig) is an invaluable skill which no self-respecting player should be without. It enables your players to keep a point alive by passing from low and preventing the ball from hitting the floor after an attacking shot into your half and also gives your side a starting point from which they can look to build their own attack!

There's more to the bump though than simply swinging your arms blindly at the ball though.

Your players should be thinking about their body position, their movement into the correct area and always be watching for visual cues. That way they're ready to react and can avoid having to react late to perform a dramatic, diving dig shot!

Passing Perfection - Get your hands up!

This week's Session works on improving your team's ability to move the ball amongst themselves - getting the ball up to your hitters accurately and quickly! Read on to learn more!

In volleyball passing is essential! If your team cannot pass the ball how can they expect to win the game?

That's why this week we work purely on ball movement - focusing on ball control, body position and anticipation - so that when the ball's coming at your players they'll know precisely how to deal with it - quickly working out the ball's trajectory, figure out how fast the ball's coming at them and get their hands up, ready to bump or set to their team-mate!

Starting with a vigorous warm-up we then progress through a series of group passing exercise which will require your players to use a variety of passing techniques before upping the tempo, getting your players to practice passing on the run and getting their hands up quickly!
