How do i get more zip in my backline attack. At 16s?

How do i get more zip in my backline attack. At 16s level players seem to just go through the motions.

do they play with a defence in front of them?

Sounds like they need competition. Set up different teams of lines and have them run your passing drills against the clock. For example, run through the hands (straight pass to all backs) from scrum half to winger scoring in a 40-50 yd space (from scrum half start). Set up cones/bags to indicate when each back should pass. Teams are penalized for dropped balls or passing early/late.

I was at a session run by Brian Ashton this thu just gone and he made an interesting statement about speed of backline and practice.

"Always practice at the speed you intend to play at, don't slow down the practice just because of a few mistakes. The mistakes will become fewer"

Kevin, how would you suggest penalizing players for errors?

I would suggest that it is not for the coach to comment/decide if the player passes too early/late. Players should be able to work this out themselves, not constantly looking to the touchline for the coach's approval. After all, we're not out there playing ;-)......Just my opinion, I guess it all comes down to coaching philosophy though!
